Early Learning for Students with Disabilities

In early history there were many stories of people with disabilities being mistreated. However, that has changed quite a bit. In the 1800's schools began to form specifically for children with disabilities. The first American school for children with disabilities was a school for the deaf founded by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet. This school was followed by the Perkins School for the Blind, Gallaudet College, and the Vineland Training School.
Communities have also created organizations that support children with disabilities. The Easter Seals organization serves communities with services that are individualized, family focused, and tailored to meet the needs of the communities they serve. The Joseph Kennedy Jr. foundation emphasizes the need to help families by informing them of resources. Autism Speaks is an organization that funds research on the causes, treatment, prevention, and creating awareness for autimsm. The Special Olympics is the largest sports organization in the world. It is an athletic program for children with disabilities. Many of these schools and organizations were founded by people that had children or grandchildren with disabilities. It is our goal to make sure your child reaches their highest potential.
